At AMI we offer a Myofascial Approach with 3 distinct services to choose from - Structural Integration (Ida Rolf), Myofascial Release ® (John Barnes), and Myofascial Massage, all of which aim to unravel adhered myofascia. Myofascia is a multi-layered connective tissue that surrounds all other soft-tissues, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs. In these sessions, slow and direct pressure is applied to areas where myofascia (muscle+fascia) may be “stuck” or adhered to other tissue. In Myofascial Release, sustained holds help the fascia slowly release whereas in Myofascial Massage and Structural Integration, the pressure may be firmer and more direct. Allison Dinsmore, Sheri Bergen and Jenny Dipasupil practice Myofascial Massage.
Our comprehensive myofascial approach can help alleviate chronic pain, improve posture, and enhance athletic performance. Our therapists will assess your individual needs and tailor the session to address your specific concerns.
Structural Integration is a type of myofascial work focusing on the connective tissue that runs throughout our bodies, surrounding muscles, organs, and nerves. Structural Integration (also called “Rolfing,” after its founder Ida Rolf) applies pressure to the stuck, shortened places, opening up restricted areas to allow greater balance, alignment, and ease in daily movement. Asymmetrical patterns are reduced, removing excess pressure on our joints. In the ten step series, the practitioner will focus on the entire body over ten sessions. Allison Dinsmore is a Practitioner of Structural Integration.
John F Barnes, PT has trained over one hundred thousand therapists and physicians in his Myofascial Release Approach ®. It is considered to be the ultimate therapy that is safe, gentle and consistently effective in producing results that last. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.) Sheri Bergen and Jenny Dipasupil are trained in the John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach ®.
The medical approach is to drug patients so they temporarily are free from pain, but does nothing about the “straight-jacket” of pressure that is causing the pain. Traditional physical, occupational and massage therapy treats the symptoms caused by the pressure of the “straightjacket” of the Myofascial system, but does nothing about the “straightjacket” of pressure that causes and perpetuates the symptoms. This is why so many patients only have temporary results never seeming to get better with traditional therapy. Only Myofascial Release treats the entire Myofascial mind/body complex eliminating the pressure of the restricted Myofascial system (the straightjacket) that causes the symptoms.
