Deep Tissue massage is a type of massage where a therapist will address muscles that are deeper in the body than what is known as superficial tissue, or muscles closer to the surface. A therapist will often utilize more pressure than in a classic Swedish massage. Some clientele find the deeper pressure to be a more effective way to release their sore and tired muscles.
There are five basic strokes in: effleurage, a long stroke used to warm and sooth the muscles; petrissage, a kneading movement which stimulates the muscles more deeply; friction, or small circular motions in a localized area; tapotement, a rapid tapping used to bring blood to the surface, and vibration, a rhythmic rocking of long muscles to increase freedom of movement.
